TIP
Instructions to make a lovely frame surrounding your design
Design a very simple frame for the design you have chosen, keeping in mind that you have to go around the curves and sharp edges using either a satin stitch or decorative stitch, you need to keep the design very simple.

If you do not have a lamp box the best way to copy your frame is to

  • cellotape the design which you drew onto the paper onto a window pane
  • Cellotape the fabric or Vlisofix (Vlisofix is what we call it in Australia, what it is called elsewhere I do not have a clue) over the top of your frame which you have drawn onto the paper
  • Vlisofix is a paper which is glued to one side and you iron the Vlisofix to the fabric
  • I ironed the Vlisofix to the back of the white fabric and then cut the white fabric to the shape you had designed to surround the design as seen in the photo.
  • I then selected a decorative stitch from my sewing machine and stitched around the edge of the frame

Cut out a contrasting lining fabric
Stitch the lining and the British Phone Booth fabric together and then satin stitch the top section ....I satin stitched the top about 4 times as it gave the cover a nice finish

Spring Meditation
Decorative Stitches Instructions from the August 2005 Video

Before you do a satin stitch always zigzag the area as this stabilizers the fabric and stops puckering

Length = 1.0 Width = 3.0
Satin Stitch

Length = .35 Width = 6.0

Stitch over the top of the satin stitch using this decorative stitch or one similar

Length = 0.5 Width = 6.0
To the side of the satin stitch, stitch the boxed scallop decorative stitch and then stitch the leaf stitch

Length = 28 Width = 9.0
 

Length = 12 Width = 8.0
All of the above decorative stitches combined in beautiful colour threads
